We at Desh Group of Companies believe that when people are given a chance, they take a step closer to achieving their dreams.
Sometimes, a lack of opportunity, not talent, drive or tenacity, can be the most formidable barrier to success.
Desh Group are helping to create opportunities for Bangladeshis of all ages. By giving back to our community, we are watering the seeds of potential within these dynamic individuals.
To that end, we are proud to fund arts and education in Bangladesh through our M. Noorul Quader Foundation and Muslim Girls High School of Mymensingh.
Desh Group’s founder, Mr. M. Noorul Quader, was a passionate, appreciative supporter of the arts.
He counted among his many friends two of Bangladesh’s master painters, Quamrul Hassan and S. M. Sultan, even organizing exhibitions for them.
As well, in the late-1970s and early-1980s, Mr. Quader commissioned several budding artists of Bangladesh in order to promote their careers to a wider audience.
To honour Mr. Quader’s enthusiasm for cultivating Bengali art and culture, Desh Group established the M. Noorul Quader Foundation in 2000.
Each year the Foundation sponsors two creative competitions:
Selected students travel to a venue in Dhaka and create a piece of artwork based on an assigned subject and within a limited time. (Students unable to attend in person send their work by post.)
The paintings are judged by esteemed Bangladeshi artists. Winners are announced and prizes are awarded at a later ceremony.
Besides awarding first, second and third prizes, the Foundation committee awards a number of “Encouragement Prizes” to further inspire students, many of whom are underprivileged, to keep developing their skills.
Each year, the Foundation calls for book submissions from Bangladeshi writers and publishers.
The submitted books are subsequently judged by a group of three prominent Bangladeshi children’s book authors, with prizes being awarded in the categories of Rhyme/Poetry, Novel, and Liberation War.
Prize-winning writers receive generous cash awards along with crests and certificates.
Muslim Girls High School is located in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, about 120 km north of Dhaka, the capital.
The high school was established in 1911 by the late Alimudding Khan, grandfather of M. Noorul Quader, the founder of Desh Group.
In 2001, Desh Group met the growing need for student accommodation at the school by funding the building of on-campus housing for students.
Today, the student hostel, M. Noorul Quader Satri Nibas, is home to 125 students during the academic year.
Mrs. Rokeya Quader, current chair of Desh Group, serves proudly as a member of the high school’s governing body.
